Rock phosphate is one of the basic raw materials needed in the manufacture of phosphatic fertilizers like single superphosphate, diammonium phosphate, nitro phosphates, etc. Commercial rock phosphate occurs in nature as deposits of apatite’s (bearing minerals) along with other accessory minerals such as quartz, silicates, carbonates, sulfates, sesquioxide’s, etc. Phosphate rock is formed in oceans in the form of calcium phosphate, called phosphorite. The phosphorus is an essential element for life and cannot be replaced.
It is used for its phosphorus content, to produce fertilizer, feed, food and pharmaceutical product.
